Lessons in Art 2010... a progressively growing article...(I will keep adding items...)
In Switzerland, when I lived in Neuchatel, we descended the Schwarz Mountain after taking the invigilator up which is a transom system. In the middle I had to pee so we went to a restroom. Funny the door was locked. You had to pay to go. Luckily one door was broken so I got to go pee. On a mountain. The schwarz mountain. Why I tell this story is because I think Canada should make their bathrooms pay to pee. or whatever business you do in public bathrooms. This will increase tax revenue & bathroom janitorial staff will be better paid & our country will be richer & more spotless like Switzerland which I love love very much probably my all time favorite country in the world after Canada, number 3 Abu Dhabi just cause of the name never been there. Louisiana 4th but that is not a country, probably should be, like the Vatican.
As compared to a flower drawing drawn directly onto that same prepped canvas the day the painting was worked...
The butterfly became more of a turtle, while the drawing done directly that day before painting was vivid & exotic...
Conclusion: try & sketch from life directly onto canvas immediately & paint soon afterwards...Old sketches , though from life, change in your mind over time, & the resulting subject may not be what you were trying for...(though I like turtles very much)...
Gesso, Walnut Oil, Knife painting...
So...three lessons here...White gesso can make yellows look brash...try a transparent gesso ...Your yellows will also look more transparent...This painting actually has a white gesso underneath called Art Spectrum from Australia...I prefer my yellows on a clear gesso like Liquitex clear gesso...But until I did this painting, I did not realise why...The yellow here should mellow out over time...I am letting it fade out a bit before varnishing...But I will probably be returning to clear gesso because of the yellow thing...
Walnut OIl paint shown here is made by Kama Pigments in Montreal...I have switched to using Kama walnut oils completely...They smell great & are great...Local to Canada too, which gives me bonus points in the buy local game...(sure beats the buying from Germany thing I was doing for the past 5 years)...Note: You have to ASK Kama for the walnut oil paint- not available automatically yet...
Painting with a knife means NO clean-up, no turpentines, No animal hair brushes...Plus it looks cool...cheaper too...
A little talk about stretcher bar wood, dammar, painting with a knife, not framing, quality not quantity...
